Overnight Snow Closes Birmingham Public Schools Friday

The snow is expected to continue to fall until 10 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service says.

For many students in Birmingham, it's going to be a three day weekend. After a night of snow that began soon after midnight, Birmingham Public Schools has closed for the day.

Officials from Birmingham Schools made the decision to close a little before 5 a.m. Friday. Also closed Friday is:

  • Eton Academy
  • Roeper Lower and Upper Schools
  • Our Shepherd Lutheran School
  • Holy Name Catholic School

Nearby, the following schools are closed:

  • Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, in Beverly Hills
  • Detroit Country Day Upper School, in Beverly Hills
  • Marian High School, in Bloomfield Hills
  • Brother Rice High School, in Bloomfield Hills
  • Academy of the Sacred Heart, in Bloomfield Hills
  • Cranbrook-Kingswood Schools, in Bloomfield Hills
  • St. Hugo of the Hills School, in Bloomfield Hills
  • St. Regis Catholic School, in Bloomfield Hills

While the Detroit Country Day Upper School has closed for the day, the school's lower, junior and middle school campuses will still have a day of parent-teacher conferences unless individually rescheduled with a teacher.

A Winter Weather Advisory expires at 7 p.m. Friday after a low-pressure system moved into southeastern Michigan overnight, bringing the threat of snow with it.

While Birmingham was only forecasted to receive between two and four inches overnight, areas north of M-59 could see up to eight inches of snow, the National Weather Service says.

The snow will continue to fall until 10 a.m. with the high reaching 31 degrees today. A total daytime accumulation of one to three inches is possible.

Tonight, the low will get down to 12 degrees, though the only precipitation forecasted for the weekend is rain on Sunday night.

Yesterday on my street, I saw a tree, on city property, with 'stuff' piled high around the base ofRead More the tree. I tried to tell the two gentlemen there it would eventually kill the tree. 'Not so!' they replied, according to, I believe, their landscaper. They then proceeded to try and placate this nosy gray haired woman. Maybe someone from the city could clue them in??
