Get Your Questions Answered Next Week During Transition to Kindergarten Meeting

Birmingham Public Schools' presents 'Transition to Kindergarten' next week at Pierce Elementary School.

If you've got a little one that will be entering kindergarten in the fall, Birmingham Public Schools is looking to make the transition a little easier.

Next week, the district will be presenting "Transition to Kindergarten," an informational session for parents from 7-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 at Pierce Elementary School.

During the session, parents can ask questions about transitioning one's child from preschool to kindergarten as well as learn more about what happens during a typical day of kindergarten at Birmingham Public Schools.

Experts will be on hand to answer questions from Birmingham Schools and the Oakland Intermediate School District, including Joan Firestone, director of Early Chilldhood at Oakland Schools, and Birmingham kindergarten teacher Dominic Nepa.

Parents will also learn more about recent changes to state rules that dictate how old a child must be to start kindergarten. According to legislation passed in late spring 2012, children must be five years old by Dec. 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. That date moves to Nov. 1 in 2013, Oct. 1 in 2014 and Sept. 1 in 2015.
