Art Lecture: The Break with Impressionism

Rather than follow the Impressionists in exploring the light and atmosphere of the outdoors, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was fascinated by the gas lights and tawdry atmosphere of 19th century Paris night life. He captured its excitement in posters that made him and the featured cabaret entertainers overnight sensations. Georges Seurat, by contrast, took an intellectual approach to painting using his academic training and contemporary color theories to make monumental paintings in a new style.

Instructor Wendy Evans has an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, England, and an MA in Art History from Wayne State University in Detroit. She teaches art history at Wayne State. Wendy volunteers at the Detroit Institute of Arts and gives lectures on art history topics around the metropolitan area.
