Art Lecture: Structure or Passion?

 

Paul Cezanne believed that art should seek for the eternal structure of nature not for the transient the Impressionists tried to capture. By looking "until my eyeballs bleed", he changed how paintings are constructed in ways that impacted the course of art. Vincent van Gogh kept to traditional subjects but brought a revolutionary intensity to painting. The highly-charged and brightly-colored marks he used to construct his paintings led artists to a new appreciation for the expressive capabilities of paint.

 Instructor Wendy Evans has an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, England, and an MA in Art History from Wayne State University in Detroit. She teaches art history at Wayne State. Wendy volunteers at the Detroit Institute of Arts and gives lectures on art history topics around the metropolitan area.
