Art Lecture: From the Natural to the Subjective
For the Symbolists, the goal of art is not to explore the natural world but the subjective, mystical world of dreams, fantasy and imagination. Odilon Redon created strange evocative creatures. Paul Gauguin sought a primitive paradise in the world but painted the paradise of his imagination. These two were major influences on the Nabi, a group of younger artists who explored the decorative quality of color in paintings of the family life around them.
Instructor Wendy Evans has an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, England, and an MA in Art History from Wayne State University in Detroit. She teaches art history at Wayne State. Wendy volunteers at the Detroit Institute of Arts and gives lectures on art history topics around the metropolitan area.
