Nerad's contract with Madison was set to expire in June 2013, however Nerad announced earlier this year that he wouldn't be seeking to extend that contract. His contract required that he give Madison five months notice before leaving.

However, Hill said that Madison released Nerad from his contract early. According to the Cap Times, the Madison School Board allowed him to leave "amicably to facilitate a smooth and early transition to his new position."

Nerad's official start date in Birmingham is July 30, however he will be taking a week of vacation in order to move.
