Wanted: Birmingham Looking to Fill Positions in Building, Fire Departments

Available positions include firefighter, a part-time fire marshal and building inspector.

The city of Birmingham is looking to fill several positions:

Firefighter/AEMT

  • Duties: fire suppression; emergency medical care; maintaining equipment, apparatus and buildings; participating in daily drills; protecting life and property; performing fire inspection duties; and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Requirements: 
    • Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalent
    • State of Michigan Firefighter II Certification
    • State of Michigan AEMT or National Registry AEMT certification
    • Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes
    • Valid Michigan operator's license with a good driving record
    • Physical condition appropriate for the position
  • Pay: Salary range of $40,625-$62,128, plus a comprehensive benefit package.

Applicants must pass both the written exam and physical ability test (CPAT) prior to application offered through the Conference of Western Wayne Firefighter Testing Program.

Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal (part-time)

  • Duties: highly responsibly supervisory and administrative functions associated with fire prevention programs and activities; enforcement of adopted fire codes and fire scene investigations; review of construction plans and field inspections for fire code compliance; representing the city and department in a variety of civic and intergovernmental settings
  • Requirements:
    • Possession of an Associate's Degree, or its equivalent, in Fire Science, supplemented by advanced training in fire prevention
    • State of Michigan Firefighter II Certification, or its equivalent
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience in fire suppression and prevention activities
    • Previous experience as a fire marshal with experience in administering International Fire Codes
    • Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes
    • Valid Michigan operator's license with a good driving record
    • Physical condition appropriate for the position
  • Pay: This position is up to 28 hours per week, with a starting wage of $35 per hour, based on qualifications

Applicants must have the ability to work independently under general policy directions, work effectively with staff at all levels, have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate. Knowledge of current office software systems, including Microsoft Office, is required.

Building Inspector

  • Duties: examination of plans and specifications; inspection of new and existing structures to determine compliance with adopted code, city ordinances, state requirements and approved plans; issuance of ordinance citations.
  • Requirements:
    • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college or trades-level coursework in construction, construction management or a related field
    • Minimum of four years of responsible experience in general building building
    • Must possess certification or the ability to qualify for provisional certification, under State of Michigan Act 54, as a building inspector
    • Must be able to obtain certification in property maintenance inspections
  • Pay: This is a full-time position with a salary range of $47,382-$59,945, plus a benefits package
