Local Voices Weigh In On Government Shutdown

The federal government's partial shutdown begins to hit home.

The first U.S. government shutdown in roughly two decades enters its second day Wednesday, and pundits estimate it could be a few weeks before Congress can stop the impasse.

That doesn't bode well for Birmingham Patch reader Bridget Rohn, who wrote about getting officially furloughed Tuesday on the Birmingham Patch Facebook page.

"A big thanks from my family to everyone that elected people that think 800,000 or so Americans getting laid off is funny and something to be joyous about," she said.

Some others also lashed out at members of Congress, regardless of political party.

"In any other business, their ineptitude would be met by being fired," wrote Birmingham Patch reader Brandon Joerges on the Birmingham Patch Facebook page.

But while politicians on both sides appear to entrench further in opposition, reader Andrew Nebulous-name took issue with non-essential government employee data.

"According to my napkin math, we have approximately 0.8 - 1.0% of the working population is Federal government. Add State & we have a significant overhead structure that is filled with inefficiencies, levels of redundancy etc. & quite frankly it needs to be fully overhauled & streamlined," he wrote.
