Woman Hit by Car While Crossing Maple Wednesday Morning

Accident victim, who was crossing the street with her son in the crosswalk, was 'conscious and talking' at Beaumont Hospital.

A woman was rushed to the hospital Wednesday morning after she was hit while crossing Maple Road at Chesterfield with her young son.

According to Cmdr. Terry Kiernan, the woman was "conscious and talking" at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Her 6-year-old son was not hurt.

According to Kiernan, the incident occured before 9 a.m. Wednesday. He said when the traffic light turned green on Chesterfield, a car began turning east onto Maple Road from Chesterfield. At that moment, the woman and her son began crossing Maple, heading north, when the crosswalk light went off.

Kiernan said the driver didn't see the pair — perhaps because the light was in his eyes, the driver told police — and struck the woman with the front left corner of his car. He was not driving fast, Kiernan said, though the woman fell back and hit her head on the pavement.

Kiernan said paramedics at the scene weren't sure of the woman's condition at the time. "She had a pretty bad head injury, apparently," he said.
