Rash of Vehicle Break-ins Reported in Birmingham

Thieves targeted several vehicles left unlocked while teens took homecoming pictures in Quarton Lake Park.

The Birmingham Police Department warned residents to lock their vehicles and to take valuables indoors after taking numerous reports of vehicle break-ins over the past week.

Officers responded to reports of five vehicle burglaries in the Maple and Lake Park area on Oct. 12 at about 4:30 p.m. police reports stated. All victims had left items in their cars while taking pictures near Quarton Lake Park for the Groves High School homecoming dance.

One of the vehicle's driver side window was shattered out, but the other vehicles were unlocked. Police are investigating.

“We’re issuing a warning to residents and visitors about valuables being stolen from vehicles,” Cmdr. Terry Kiernan said. “We encourage everyone to remove keys and valuables from their vehicles, and to lock their car doors.”

Several residents reported similar thefts from their vehicles in the Lincoln Hills Golf Course parking lot on Saturday. No suspect information was available in any of the incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 248-530-1870.
