Thief strips catalytic converter off car parked at Gasow

A woman reported that someone stole the catalytic converter off her car last week. According to police reports, the woman's car was parked in the Gasow Veterinary Hospital lot off Woodward between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14.

Police have no suspects at this time though catalytic converter thefts aren't new to the Birmingham-Bloomfield area. Another converter was reportedly cut off a car parked on Derby Road in early December, police say — an incident that was similar to a string of catalytic converter thefts in Bloomfield Township in late fall.

The converters, which are used to filter an engine's emissions, are commonly targeted by thieves because of the valuable metal components inside, such as platinum or palladium, authorities said.
