Police Searching for Man Who Broke into Market Square

Following is a roundup of recent Birmingham Police reports:

Employees scare off man breaking into Market Square

Police are looking for a man who broke into early Monday. According to police reports, the man used a crowbar to smash the front glass door of the grocery around 6:15 a.m. Monday. He entered the building, not realizing there were already four employees at the store, the report said. One of the employees yelled at the man, who ran out of the store and northbound up Southfield Road. While running, the man dropped an empty cloth bag on the sidewalk as well as the crowbar, the report said.

Later, when Birmingham Police and a state police K-9 unit were searching the area, the dog picked up the man’s track until the intersection of Southfield and Wakefield, the report said. Police believe the man had a car waiting at that location.

Man removes his pants at Cafe Via, urinates on himself

A man was arrested late last week after allegedly urinating in himself in public. According to police reports, employees first saw the man sitting at one of the restaurant’s outdoor tables around 12:25 a.m. Sept. 9. The employees told police the man appeared to be intoxicated and was talking on the phone. According to police reports, the man then laid on the ground and took off his pants. Employees told police the man urinated on himself while he was talking on the phone.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the man who, they said, appeared to be intoxicated, according to a police report. The man was taken into custody, charged with disorderly conduct and held overnight.

Bicycles stolen from open garages, downtown sidewalks

Two bicycles were stolen last weekend, each worth approximately $500. The first bicycle was taken sometime between 5-5:30 p.m. Saturday from inside the owner’s open, detached garage on the 1000 block of Bennaville. The bicycle was a black Schwinn, police reports state. The second bicycle, a silver Trek Navigator, was taken from outside , at 215 N. Old Woodward, Sunday around 5:30 p.m. According to police reports, the owner had left the bicycle on the sidewalk unlocked for about 10 minutes.
