Police Blotter: Florist Robbed; Teens Caught in Closed Hotel

Tiffany's smash-and-grab, minors discovered with marijuana in empty building and series of car break-ins during snowstorm round out week's police reports.

The is investigating a smash-and-grab at the on Monday. According to reports, the owner left and locked the building around 11 a.m. to make a delivery. At 11:24 a.m., he received a phone call from his alarm company, saying the alarm had been activated. When the owner returned, he found the front door smashed and $120 in cash missing from the cash register. The suspect left a cell phone next to the register, the police report said, and police believe the thief used a stone statue outside the building to break the glass door.

Five cars broken into during snowstorm

Birmingham Police are investigating after five cars were reported broken into Sunday night on Kimberly Street, Devon Lane and Pilgrim Avenue. All five were parked on the street or in a driveway, and according to reports, General Motors products. In all cases, police say the driver's side window was smashed and an entertainment or GPS system taken from the dashboard. 

Police believe the incidents are related, though the thefts were spread out — thefts occured in the 500 block of Kimberly, 2000 block of Devon and the 1000 block of Pilgrim. The thefts occurred between 11 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, and only one victim reported hearing a crash around 3-4 a.m. At the time he thought it was a tree limb breaking because of the snowstorm.

Minors sneak into abandoned hotel, caught smoking pot

Four minors were discovered trespassing at the closed Barclay Inn, at the corner of Maple Road and Woodward Avenue, around 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9, wandering around and smoking marijuana. According to police reports, Birmingham Police found the males ages 16-18 after someone alerted them that there were people in the building. After calling in the to help them access the building, police say they found the young men in two rooms smoking marijuana. The boys tol police they had gotten into the building by climbing up a ladder and drain pipe outside the building. All four were taken into custody, charged with trespassing and possessing marijuana and released on bond.
