Drunken Driver Crashes Into Pole While Texting in Birmingham

The Birmingham Police Department provided the following information. Arrests, where they are mentioned, do not indicate conviction.

Officers with the Birmingham Police Department made multiple alcohol-related arrests over the past week. Here are the incidents highlighted from recent police reports.

An officer on patrol approached a vehicle that struck a pole and shrubbery along Old Woodward Avenue just north of Vinewood Street at about 1:30 a.m. July 28, reports said. The driver, a 48-year-old Rochester man, was under the influence of alcohol and also told police he was texting when he crashed, according to reports. No injuries were reported. 

Officers arrested the man without incident and issued citations for operating while intoxicated and operating while sending text causing accident. A court date is pending.  

Police nab reckless driver
Officers responded to a motorist call about a reckless driver in the area of Cummings and Grant at about 10 p.m. on July 22. Police pulled the vehicle over after watching it swerve erratically, reports said. The driver, a 44-year-old Clarkston man, was under the influence of alcohol. 

Officers arrested him without incident, issued a citation for operating while intoxicated, and a court date is pending.
