Birmingham Baby Dies After Mother Falls Asleep Breastfeeding
The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office said the death, which happened last Wednesday, was an accident.
A 1-month-old Birmingham baby died last week after being suffocated during breastfeeding, and according to officials, it was all an accident.
According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, the baby's mother told police that she fell asleep while breastfeeding on Wednesday, March 13 at their Bird Avenue home.
After calling 911 and trying to perform CPR, the baby's father tried driving the pair to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

"You can certainly see it: mothers who are very tired, breastfeeding, fall asleep, and anatomically the infant is trying to feed, and they can easily suffocate," Birmingham's Assistant Fire Chief John Connaughton told the Free Press Monday.
According to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office, the baby died due to "near-asphyxia with complications."
