This week's Best Thing We Ate This Week takes us back in time a bit — back to when the Christmas-New Years rush was just about to set in and I had found a bit of time to relax over Sunday brunch at Birmingham's .
I enjoy trying out a restaurant's seasonal menu, particularly in the winter when things tend to be full of spices, butter and warm flavors. That means I had to try one of Commonwealth's December specials, their Cinnamon Apple French Toast. Made with hearty challah and Macintosh and Granny Smith apples and then smothered in a caramel-cider sauce, this dish reminded me of those sweet, slightly-warmed days of autumn. It was a good thing.
