Tributes For Former Birmingham Firefighter Patrick Nagel

The Birmingham Fire Department helped establish a memorial fund to honor former firefighter Patrick Nagel.

Patrick Nagel, a member of the Birmingham Fire Department for 16 years, was laid to rest Saturday at a funeral service in St. Michael's Church in Sterling Heights.
The 43-year-old father of two died unexpectedly Monday in his Clinton Township home.

Birmingham Fire Chief Mike Metz said the support Nagel's co-workers received from each other and from others in Birmingham and beyond helped cushion the shock during a very difficult week.

Many of those impacted shared their thoughts and tributes online, including these poignant remarks from former co-workers and friends on the Wujek-Calcaterra and Sons guest book.

"I had the pleasure of working with Pat at Birmingham Fire. He was a very special man with a smile that never seemed to fade. Treasured memories of Pat will live forever in the hearts of those who knew him," wrote Mary Ann and David Sopko.

"I worked with Pat for about 12 years and as you know he was one of the good guys, always a smile and a spring in his step, just a great person to be around. He will be missed by all that knew him," wrote Gary and Cindy Nicks.

How to help

The department helped establish the Patrick C. Nagel Memorial Fund, and donations can be made at any Chase Bank branch, or sent to the Birmingham Fire Department at 572 S. Adams St. Birmingham, Mi. 48009.
