Seaholm Teacher Bows Out of State House Race

Scott I. Craig, a history and political science teacher at Birmingham Seaholm High School will not challenge State Rep. Kurt Heise, R-Plymouth.

On Tuesday morning, Seaholm High School teacher Scott Craig was a candidate for the 20th District seat in the State House of Representatives.
By Tuesday night he was out of the race.

Citing personal reasons centered around the finances of a campaign against an incumbent legislator, Craig bowed out of the contest and will stay in the classroom full-time for the foreseeable future.

"I am nearing retirement as a teacher, but can’t afford to retire yet," the veteran government and history teacher said in an email to Patch. "The time necessary to be a viable candidate would take away from my work as a teacher, and possibly jeopardize my employment."

He said he also recently learned that winning the election would force him to retire early, because taking a leave of absence is not a legal option.

Craig, trustee on the Northville school board and president of the Northville Democratic Club, announced last week that he filed to challenge State Rep. Kurt Heise, R-Plymouth, to represent residents in Northville, Plymouth, Plymouth Township and eastern Canton Township.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of so many people.
