5 Things To Look Forward To in Birmingham in 2013
From the 50th anniversary of the Birmingham Village Fair to the November general elections, here's what we're thinking ahead to in 2013.
A lot happened in 2012 — but that year's over. A lot is on deck for the Birmingham community in 2013 as well. At Birmingham Patch, here are the top five things we're looking forward to this year:
1. Village Fair turns 50: The Birmingham Village Fair hits a big milestone in 2013, turning 50 years old in June. The fair, featuring rides, a midway and more, will take place in Shain Park Thursday, May 30-Saturday, June 2. "The Village Fair truly has become part of the fabric of the greater-Birmingham community," the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber's blog reads.
2. Daniel Nerad begins his first year in Birmingham: Birmingham Public Schools' newest superintendent, Daniel Nerad, embarks on his first full year with the district, after he was hired in the summer. This spring, he'll lead the school district as it begins its latest strategic planning session.

3. New year, new elections: Just because the 2012 presidential election has come to an end, that doesn't mean election season is over (good and bad, depending on your taste). There are no school board elections this year, due to a new state law requiring even-year elections. However, City Commissioners Rackeline Hoff, Stuart Sherman and Mark Nickita's latest four-year terms are up in 2013, meaning another political battle is brewing in the fall.
4. Downtown road construction: OK, maybe we're not looking forward to this one, but the total overhaul of Pierce and Merrill in downtown Birmingham should force everyone to pay attention to where they're going this spring. The city plans to rip up the sidewalks and reconstruct part of Pierce and Merrill near City Hall and South Old Woodward.

5. More fun happenings than we can count: Every year is a big one in Birmingham, with neighborhood groups, businesses and non-profits hosting new events every year. Make sure you clear your calendar for these dates now:
- Birmingham Restaurant Week: Jan. 28-Feb. 1, Feb.4-8
- Uptown Film Festival: March 7-9
- Dash for Destiny: May 5
- Art Birmingham: May 11
- Day On the Town: July 27
- Birmingham Cruise Event: Aug. 17
- Birmingham Bike Festival: Aug. 25
- Birmingham Street Art Fair: Sept. 21-22
