Weekend Planner: What Else Is There to Do In Birmingham Beside the Dream Cruise?

Happening in and around Birmingham this weekend is the Summer of Riesling Dinner at Tallulah and a praise music festival in Southfield.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend — well, maybe that's not true. We all know of a certain rolling car show happening on Woodward and in downtown Birmingham on Saturday. 

But believe it or not, there's more going on this weekend in and around Birmingham that has nothing to do with chrome or bumpers, motors or car exhaust.

  • Why Go: Wrap up your Woodward Dream Cruise weekend with Tallulah's Summer of Riesling dinner on Sunday. Part of the international Summer of Riesling, the event is one of hundreds worldwide celebrating Riesling wine. The evening will include dinner, live entertainment and plenty of wine tastings. Reservations are required.

  • When: 6:30 p.m. Friday
  • Where: Troy Lanes (1950 E. Square Lake in Troy)
  • Cost: $20
  • Why Go: Support the American Cancer Society DeterminNation 2012 Detroit Marathon running team-in-training for a night of fundraising in Troy. For $20, get three games of bowling, shoe rental, pizz and non-alcoholic drinks. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Prizes will be provided by Royal Oak Brewery, Hanson's Running Shop and Miner's Den.

  • When: 4-8 p.m. Friday-Sunday
  • Where: Pet Supplies Plus (2057 S. Telegraph Rd. in Bloomfield Hills)
  • Cost: $59 adoption fee
  • Why Go: Take a break from the Dream Cruise and find a forever friend this weekend at Bloomfield Hills' Pet Supplies Plus's cat adoption event. At least 200 cats of various breeds, colors and personalities from the Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills will be available for adoptions. In addition, area veteranian Jonathan Ross will provide free pet fitness evaluations all day Saturday for adopted cats and kittens. The 100th cat-adopter will receive a $100 Pet Supplies Plus shopping spree, while the 200th adopter gets a $500 shopping spree.

  • Where: The Luna Lounge (1815 N. Main St. in Royal Oak)
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Celebrate the end of Dream Cruise weekend with a show by the Killer Flamingos at Royal Oak's Luna Lounge. Dance away the night with high-energy blend of pop and rock. Attendees must be 21 years old or older.

  • When: 4-7 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Peace Lutheran Church (17029 W. 13 Mile Rd. in Southfield)
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Join the Peace Lutheran Church for an evening of praise bands and spiritual bands on the lawn. The evening will feature praise bands from several surrounding churches playing spiritual music. Refreshments will be provided though you can bring your own. Donations will be donated to Freedom House in Detroit.
