Weekend Planner: Parade, Birmingham Ice Show and More

Also headlining this weekend: a golf tournament and an open house at Mills Pharmacy.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • When: 1 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Parade starts at South Old Woodward and Brown, and ends at
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Check out police motorcycles, local marching bands, area notables and a Whiskers and Waggles Pet Parade at the 2012 Celebrate Birmingham Parade, happening in downtown Birmingham. In addition, the will have games and activities for the kids from 1-4 p.m. in Shain Park, while the will host a Family Fun Day from 1:30-4 p.m.

  • When: 1 p.m., 7 p.m. Saturday; 1 p.m., 5:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Cost: Adults $13 in advance, $15 at the door; Children $8 in advance, $10 at the door; Children under three are free
  • Why Go: Watch the students from Birmingham's neighborhood ice skating classes show off their skills at the ice arena's 40th annual show this weekend. This year's show — which began in the 1960s as an attraction for what was then the city's outdoor skating rink — is themed "Postcards from the Edge" and features more than 11 skating coaches and choreographers and almost 200 skaters.

  • When: 1 p.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Cost: $75 per person; $300 for four-person team
  • Why Go: Practice your swing while doing a bit of networking this weekend at the Birmingham Business Golf Tournament. Plus, enjoy a complimentary clinic with a PGA golf teacher and awards dinner. In addition, each participant will receive a fitted pair of Footjoy Shoes.

  • When: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Mills Pharmacy is celebrating its 66th anniversary this year, as well as a recent renovation, by re-introducing itself to the neighborhood with a two-day long party. There will be tastings and demonstrations all day of variouse Mills Pharmacy products, as well as fresh grilled fare courtesy of Holiday Market.
