Weekend Planner: Halloween at the Y, 'Phantom of the Opera' Concert

Also happening this weekend: a Beverly Hills church is hosting a Trunk-or-Treat while Detroit Guitar is throwing a Guitar Showcase Saturday.

Music: 'Phantom of the Opera'

  • When: 6 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: St. James Episcopal Church
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Love Phantom of the Opera? St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Birmingham has the perfect night for you. St. James will be showing the 1924 silent film Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney. However, hear the organ music in person as the film is accompanied by organist Glenn Burdette.

Halloween: Halloween at the Y

  • When: 5-7 p.m. Friday
  • Where: Birmingham Family YMCA
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Birmingham Family YMCA is throwing a Halloween bash this Friday. The free event includes games, crafts, candy, Halloween stories, a bounce house and more.

History: Greenwood Cemetery Tour

  • When: 1 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Greenwood Cemetery
  • Cost: $10 in advance, $15 at the gate
  • Why Go: Get spooked out with a taste of some local history during the annual Greenwood Cemetery Tour. Sponsored by the Friends of the Birmingham Historical Museum and Park, the tour takes a look at Birmingham's earliest stories, from early movers-and-shakers to tales of war.

Music: Guitar Showcase

  • When: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Detroit Guitar
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Detroit Guitar is celebrating the guitar all day long this Saturday, with a day-long event featuring live music, snacks, a chance to mingle with local guitar teachers and aficionados and plenty of deals. Representatives from Fender, Gretsch and Orange will be on hand to talk about their instruments and amps, while Detroit Guitar will be offering up to 40 percent off all items, 25 percent off special orders and trade-in specials. 

Halloween: Trunk-or-Treat

  • When: 4:30-7 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Ascension of Christ Lutheran Church in Beverly Hills (corner of 14 Mile and Pierce)
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Bring the kids out for some trick-or-treating at the Ascension of Christ Lutheran Church in Beverly Hills. Everyone is invited to dress up in costume, and there will be cider, candy, chili, hot dogs, cookies and plenty of prizes.
