Weekend Planner: Bike Festival, Family Fun Day

A trunk show at Schubot Jewelers and a jazz concert in Bloomfield Township are scheduled.

  1. Where:
    Downtown Birmingham
    When: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
    Why Go: After choking on car exhaust fumes the past month, Birmingham is celebrating non-motorized transportation with its first annual bike festival. The event includes a half-mile cycling race for amateurs and professionals through downtown, bike inspections, a "kids corral" and various activities and local vendors.

  2. Where:

    When: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday
    Why Go: The Central Birmingham Residents Association will  hold a family fun day Saturday to raise funds for the iMatter program at . The day will include games and prizes, crafts, a police and fire truck and food.

  3. Where:

    When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday
    Why Go: The Red Cross will hold a blood drive at the library Friday. To schedule an appointment, call 313-549-7041 though walk-ins are welcome. Also, 16-year-olds are allowed to donate this year if they meet the health and weight requirements, plus have a Red Cross Consent form completed by a legal guardian.

  4. Where:

    When: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday
    Why Go: The Birmingham jeweler will host a special Italian Collection trunk show Friday and Saturday. Schubot advises for best service and selection to call ahead at 1-800-724-8268.

  5. Where: at 2184 S.Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township
    When: 7 p.m. Friday
    Why Go: Pianist Matthew Ball, also known as the "Boogie Woogie Kid," and jazz guitarist Rob Bourassa will perform Friday night. Tickets are $10 for adults (children are free) and reservations are required by calling 1-248-334-0566.
