Oh, Christmas Tree: Snapshots from Shain Park Tree Lighting

Downtown Birmingham comes alive with large crowds, Santa's arrival and a brightly lit Christmas tree.

A brisk Thanksgiving eve didn't prevent the warmth of the Birmingham community  from heating up with its cheerful, holiday spirit. Attendees young and old donned hats, gloves, mittens and boots to the annual tree-lighting countdown and ceremonies before Santa's arrival.

The official start of the holiday season brought  the Birmingham Brass Band to the park to blow their horns to the tunes of such favorites as "Frosty the Snowman," while the rosy-cheeked Beverly Singers from crooned "Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All the Way."

The large cocoa- and coffee-sipping (courtesy of of Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills) crowd awaited Santa's arrival and the magnificent tree lighting with a sleighful of anticipation.
