Grab & Go Planner: Puppet Shows, Bullying Workshops and Pizza-Making Classes

This week, learn how to make healthy family dinners, watch marionettes perform 'Purim Shpiel' and watch 'Hansel and Gretel' at the Marquis Theatre.

Do you feel the itch to get out with the family this week, but don't know what to do? We've found a slew of things to do in and around Birmingham this week, from a production of Hansel and Gretel to a bullying workshop.

  • Why go: Pam Gustairs, a chef at Holiday Market, will teach parents and kids the secret to making pizza dough then making it delicious with ideas on how to create homemade pizzas. Plus, participants will come home with dinner already made: a pizza and salad.
  • Where:
  • When: 1-3 p.m. Saturday
  • Cost: $30 a pair, $11 for each additional child; $8 materials fee payable to the instructor

  • Why go: Children ages 6-14 can learn how the destructive power of bullying how they can make a difference by learning how to handle tough situations. Parents attend and will have attend a separate workshop.
  • Where:
  • When: 2:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Cost: $46 for two siblings and parents, $16 for each additional child

  • Why go: Parents, it’s your chance to get out! Get out of the house while the Birmingham YMCA takes care of your kids ages 3-7. While you're out, your kids will have fun participating in games, sports, arts and crafts, story time and movies.
  • Where:
  • When: 6-10 p.m. Friday. There is another Parents Night Out scheduled for April 15.
  • Cost: $35 for YMCA Members, $40 for community participants, $10 for each additional child

Hansel and Gretel at the Marquis Theatre

  • Why go: Enjoy the Marquis Theatre's spring play with a great way to introduce your kids to the theater. The lobby will be decorated with bunnies  and your kids can sit up close to watch to classic tale of Hansel and Gretel. Plus, every play has at least one chase scene through the audience, guaranteeing extra fun.
  • Where: Marquis Theatre, 135 East Main, Northville
  • When: 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, March 19-May 1; 2:30 p.m. April 19-22; No performances April 24 and 25.
  • Cost: $8.50. No children younger than three.

Purim Shpiel at the Detroit Puppet Theater

  • Why go: This is classic puppetry at its best. Purim Shpiel is the story from the book of Esther, highlighted by the handcrafted marionettes, costumes and authentic music. The founders of the Detroit Puppet Theater trained in classical puppetry arts and their masterful performances show it.
  • Where: Detroit Puppet Theater, 25 East Grand River, Detroit
  • When: 2 p.m. each Saturday through March 26
  • Cost: $10 adults, $5 children. Puppetry workshop after the performance, $8 per project
