Grab & Go Planner: Musicals, Sewing and the Zoo

Take your children to see their older peers in 'Annie Get Your Gun' and 'The Music Man Junior' or learn some hand sewing skills – plenty to choose from this week for family fun.

The family best bets for the week ahead include plays at Seaholm High School and The Community House, a trip to the children's museum and a ticket to the 3D/4D theater at the zoo.

  • Why go: Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man, a classic of how Harold Hill fast-talks small town America into forming a boys’ band, has been abridged to 60-80 minutes with music transposed into keys appropriate for young voices. The play is put on by Sara Smith Productions.

  • When: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday; 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday

Hand Sewing for Kids

  • Why go: This event is for children ages 8-11 who want to learn the basics of hand sewing, including the proper way to sew on a button, commonly used stitches, basting and more. Children will create their own unique sock creatures to take home.

  • When: 10:15-11:15 a.m. Saturday
  • Cost: $35

Detroit Children’s Museum

  • Why go: There are planetarium shows for preschoolers that don’t get completely dark, so don't worry about young children getting scared. Plus don't forget the hands-on activities, including a Silver Bolt Mine where kids can dig for silver and gold nuggets, a magnet table, a grocery store and a zookeeper or vet area where kids can dress up in costumes.
  • Where: Detroit Children’s Museum, 6134 Second Ave., Detroit
  • When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Extended hours April 4-9 and April 18-23.
  • Cost: $4 adults, $2 children 2-12, free for ages 1 or younger
  • What else: Because the Detroit Science Center has a partnership with the Children’s Museum, you get in free with a purchase of a ticket to the Detroit Science Center or a membership at the Detroit Science Center.

Wild Adventure 3D/4D Theater

  • Why go: It’s the area’s only 3D/4D 126-seat theater that creates mist, wind and scents. (The Art of Manufacturing Theater at Ford Rouge Plant Tour creates 4D effects, but is a smaller theater). Visitors receive 3D glasses when going in. Kids must be 2 years old but the special 4D effects might be too intense for kids younger than 5. The movie showing until mid-May is Deep Sea: The Ride.
  • Where: Ford Education Center at The Detroit Zoo
  • When: Times vary but run during regular zoo hours
  • Cost: $4
