Warm Weather Delays Opening of Barnum Ice Rink

The Department of Public Services said it needs consecutive days with low temperatures before it can fill and open the outdoor rink.

While some people may enjoy the recent stretch of sunny, above-freezing weather, this winter's few consecutive days with low temperatures means outdoor ice skating has been temporarily placed on hold in Birmingham.

The outdoor ice rink at , located at the corner of Purdy and Frank streets, hasn't opened yet for the season, despite a November memo from the (DPS) stating that the rink would be open to the public by mid-December.

As part of its January newsletter, DPS said the ice rink would be filled and opened once temperatures remain low for several consecutive days.

Meanwhile, hockey fans and ice skaters are asked to check bhamgov.org/barnum for an announcement as to when the rink will open for the season.

The city will maintain the rink until Feb. 15, at which point the rink will remain in place for as long as weather conditions allow. The city will not resurface or replace rink materials after that point if the ice melts.
