Baldwin Fundraiser to Raise Money for Library Youth Room

The Books and Bites event takes place 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

When it comes to Thursday's at , it's all about the kids.

"With your support we will be able to invigorate and enliven a space that is vital to early childhood development," said Matt Church, Baldwin's assistant director.

The first annual fundraiser kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday in the library Grand Hall, with all funds going toward refurbishing the library's youth room.

The event includes a strolling dinner from various area restaurants, live music and a live auction featuring 50 items donated from Birmingham businesses. All food and alcohol has been donated at no cost to the library.

According to Church, the youth room project has been divided into two stages. The library is first looking to "enliven" the youth room's early learning corner with paint and new carpet. "Cognitive manipulatives" will also be added to the wall to help kids with hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, Church said, in addition to new shelving, tables and stools and a refurbished puppet stage.

Next, the library would like to purchase a fourth early-literacy, touchscreen computer. "They've been really popular," Church said. "This generation likes to touch things."

Church estimates the entire project will cost $20,000-$25,000. At the moment, Church said they'll see how much money the library raises through the fundraiser then determine where to find the rest of the funds.

However, Church said the response has been overwhelmingly positive so far. The library expected to sell 250-300 tickets; so far, 230 have been sold.

"We're just really excited for a first-time event," Church said. "It has come together so nicely."

Tickets to the event are $50 and be reserved in advance by calling 248-554-4683.
