5 Things to Know This Week: Beatles Tribute Band, Author Readings and More

Here is what's going on this week in Birmingham.

  1. As part of the city's Concert in the Park series, Toppermost, a Beatles tribute band, will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at . Performers are Tom Diab (Paul McCartney), Ron Lockhart (George Harrison), Ray Steinberg (Ringo Starr) and Alex Lumelsky (John Lennon).
  2. The summer poetry and fiction series at the continues Monday at 7 p.m., featuring Diane Dickinson and Dorene O'Brien. Dickinson's poems have appeared in California Quarterly and Altadena Review, among others, while O'Brien is currently working on a novel about fossil hunters in Ethiopia and a short story collection that explores the relationship between time, place and memory.

City to hold several meetings: Several boards and commissions will meet this week, including the , which meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the ; the , which meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the second-floor meeting room in ; and the Principal Shopping District Board, which meets at 8 a.m. Thursday at .
  4. : Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield is hosting "Israel, Iran and Peace: Congress and the Middle East" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, featuring guest speaker U.S. Ambassador to Israel Bradley Gordon. A light dessert reception will follow.
  5. : The invites families to enjoy stories, songs and activities celebrating Mexico and Latin America at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The program is designed for children 7 and older. No registration is necessary.
