What's Your Favorite Sweet Shop for Sweetest Day?

Today is Sweetest Day, a holiday in which we honor our sweeties with plenty of sugary treats. Which is your favorite sweet shop in Birmingham?

Sweetest Day is here and while some may see it as Valentine's Day, part two, it can be serious business for area candy shops and those who enjoy any excuse to enjoy a special cupcake or box of chocolate from their sweeties.

Want to impress your special someone with some history to go with their sugary treat? Here's some fast facts about the holiday from Retail Confectioners International:

  • The first Sweetest Day was celebrated in Cleveland in 1921 when a man concerned the city's orphans and shut-ins distributed small gifts throughout the city so they didn't feel forgotten or neglected.
  • Sweetest Day is celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region and parts of northeastern United States.
  • Every year, the holiday is celebrated on the third Saturday of October.
  • Detroit and Cleveland are considered the biggest cities for Sweetest Day, with the Sanders Candy Company driving the holiday's popularity in Detroit.
