Best Thing We Ate This Week: Cracked Pepper Swiss Bread

We found several ways to use one delicious loaf of bread baked locally.

Sometimes when you go into a restaurant or bistro, you don't just want one meal — you want something you can eat on all week. That's what I wanted when I walked into late last week and picked up one of their cracked pepper swiss bread loaves.

Not exactly spicy but definitely cheesy and flavorful, the bread is pretty dense but makes a great side to soups and salads, a pairing I made several times over the weekend.

While a savory bread isn't exactly right for french toast, I also used up the rest of my loaf by using nice, thick slices when I made a chicken caesar club sandwich one night. The recipe called for ciabatta bread, but Great Harvest's cracked pepper swiss bread worked out even better.

Birmingham's Great Harvest, owned locally by Kevin and Tina Yancey, has several daily bread specials, as well as sandwiches and dozens of cookies and other sweet treats. What's your favorite seasonal bread there?

Correction: The photo cutline was changed to reflect that the bread in question is cracked pepper swiss bread.
