Community Corner

Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary Hosts Open House to Reintroduce Itself to Neighborhood

Mills Pharmacy captures nostalgia of neighborhood corner store with a modern twist

Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary is not new to the Birmingham area; in fact, 2012 marks its 66th anniversary as a well-known staple in the community. But what is new is the entire look, feel and design of the store, which was completely revamped by pharmacists who boast a combined 30 years of experience, Pierre Boutros and his brother, Hany, who bought the business 2 years ago.

“We want to carry on the tradition of the neighborhood pharmacy, where customer service is the most important aspect,” said Pierre. “We pride ourselves on knowing our customers by name, and truly caring about the health and wellbeing of each and every person who comes into our store.”

At the core of the store is a full service pharmacy and on-site compounding lab, where the staff delivers customized, attentive care to each and every one of their customers. Pierre and Hany’s focus is truly on the health and wellbeing of their customers – and have even said their ultimate goal is to have customers who are living healthy, happy lives sans prescriptions.

When visitors enter Mills, they’ll quickly realize this isn’t a run-of-the-mill pharmacy.  In addition to the sleek design, including modern concrete floors, clean lines and brushed steel shelves, Mills has set itself apart with its addition of a traditional apothecary.

“The new design was created to update and unify the exterior. Its modern design is contrasted by natural, warm materials like reclaimed oak. It provides the perfect showcase for the products,” said Hany.

The boutique apothecary portion of the 5500-square-foot space boasts personal care products, in a wide range of prices, from all over the world.  Similar to a European pharmacy, customers can find the very best in skincare, health and well-being products, herbal remedies, homeopathic alternatives, organic baby care, pet care and home care products, in addition to the more traditional pharmacy items.

Rita Sayegh, Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary’s Retail Director, is in charge of carefully choosing which products land on the shelves. “We choose unique personal care products, specialty skin care, distinct fragrances and natural cosmetics. Many of the vendors we carry are exclusive to Mills and are only found in the finest boutiques around the world,” said Sayegh.

To complete its status as a true neighborhood destination, Mills opened Epicure, a gourmet convenience market attached to the main store. Epicure offers unique, gourmet food items and beverages, including Michigan-made brands like Caitlin’s Granola, Anthology Coffee and Thomas Organic Creamery. It also offers prepared foods courtesy of Holiday Market.

Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary invites the public to an Open House on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, May 20th from 10 am to 3 pm.  Attendees will enjoy fresh grilled fare courtesy of Holiday Market, and tastings, demonstrations and samplings from over 15 different vendors.
