"Scenes and Pictures"

The Birmingham Concert Band will perform a special concert, “Scenes and Pictures,” on Sunday, May 1 at Seaholm High School in Birmingham. The program begins at 3:30 PM.

The May 1 concert will feature the band in performance of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” and other music inspired by the visual arts. Unique to the event will be an art exhibition provided by the Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies, a scholarship award and live painting demonstrations from Canton’s Three Cities Art Club.

Of special significance to its local audience, the Birmingham Concert Band will also be presenting a musical tribute to an esteemed music educator and conductor, William “Jack” Foster. Foster was long-time band director for the Clawson Public Schools and developed one of Michigan’s most respected band programs. The band will honor Foster with the performance of “Flourishes” by W. Francis McBeth. The work was commissioned by and dedicated to Foster and the Clawson High School Band and premiered in 1982.
