What's New at the Birmingham Cruise? Corvettes, Graffiti and One Souped-Up Mustang

Chevrolet is back in 2012, bringing with them a life-sized Corvette timeline and Detroit graffiti artist Shades to this year's Birmingham Cruise Event.

While Woodward is guaranteed to be packed next weekend, Birmingham will also be celebrating Detroit's car culture with the fourth annual .

From 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Old Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham will be packed with classic cars during the city's annual car show, hosted by Birmingham's . Featuring more than 300 classic cars in 2012, the car show will set up between Merrill and Lincoln.

Chevrolet will also be returning to Birmingham in 2012, setting up near the grassy triangle that straddles South Old Woodward and Woodward Avenue, south of the 555 building.

Chevrolet picked Birmingham to help celebrate the car brand's 100th anniversary during the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise, bringing in historic Chevys from the General Motors Heritage Center as well as Food Network host Guy Fieri.

What will be new at the Chevrolet display in 2012? Corvettes, graffiti and a look at Chevy's history in the miltary:

  • A life-sized Corvette timeline, including milestone Corvettes and engines from the brand's 60-year history
  • Detroit graffiti artist, Shades, will be painting a large Corvette-inspired graffiti mural throughout the day
  • A Chevrolet military display
  • Chevrolet "Modern Family" display, showcasing Chevrolet's vehicles and accessories
  • Heritage and specialty vehicles

Not to be outdone, Ford will also be making a statement during the Birmingham Cruise.WCSX  FM-94.7, who will be on hand all day, will be displaying a completed Stone Soup Boss 5.0 Mustang from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Children's Miracle Network from Beaumont Children's Hospital will be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win the car. All proceeds will benefit Beaumont Children's Hospital.

  • Where: Between Merrill and Lincoln on South Old Woodward
  • Parking: Parking is available at Birmingham's five parking decks. The first two hours are free; parking is $1 an hour after that.
  • For cruisers: Event-day registration is open to individual cars, model year 1979 and older. Registration is open after 10:15 a.m. at the registration tent at South Old Woodward and Brown. Day-of parking is $25 and first-come, first-served.
