Common Ground Art Fair Returns to Birmingham

What you need to know about Common Ground's 39th annual Art Fair in downtown Birmingham this weekend.

Common Ground's 39th annual Art Fair will take over the streets of downtown Birmingham this Saturday and Sunday.

The fair, formerly known as Art in the Park, is back at South Old Woodward Avenue and will feature more than 160 juried artists and artisans who will display their works for sale in tents that will line the roadway. Visitors can expect to see hundreds, if not thousands of pieces of original art, including ceramics, paintings, sculptures, jewelry and photos.

The basics

  • When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Along South Old Woodward Avenue between Maple Road and Frank Street.
  • Road closures: South Old Woodward Avenue will be closed south of Maple Road
  • Parking: Parking will be available on the street as well as in the city's five parking structures all weekend long. At the parking structures, the first two hours are free and each hour after that costs $1. At the meters, parking is $1 an hour.
  • On Sunday, parking in both the parking structures and on the street is free. For a map of Birmingham's parking structures, visit the city's website.
  • Price: Admission to the fair is free. Artwork is available for purchase at individual booths.
  • For kids: The Detroit Institute of Arts will offer hands-on children's activities, including papel picado, used in Mexican and Mexican American communities to create colorful banners, flags, and table cloths for special occasions.
