Birmingham Bike Festival Draws Racers, Fans Downtown

Hundreds turned out to race and watch around downtown Birmingham Sunday.

For one day, speeding was allowed on the streets of downtown Birmingham on Sunday — that is if you're pedaling on two, or in some cases or three wheels during the 2013 Birmingham Bike Festival Sunday.

The third annual Birmingham Bike Festival featured multiple races of all age groups throughout the day as host the 2013 and 2014 Michigan State Criterium Championship for men. It also was  fund-raiser for Miles 4 Alex and Detroit2Nepal Foundation (D2N), which funds health and educational projects for children in Nepal.

"Alex died 14 and-a-half years ago, and it's a thrill to see her legacy still impacting so many families," said Bill Graham, of his daughter and event namesake, Alex, who died of bone cancer. He said she would have approved of the partnership with D2N.

"She always cared about the underdog and the have-nots," he told the audience before the riders set off.
