Kid Friendly Events at Birmingham's Day on the Town

Day on the Town is a lot more than just shopping. Check out this year's kids attractions.

Though shopping is the main draw to Birmingham's Day on the Town, there's plenty in store for children that will be downtown for all or some of Saturday's festivities. Here's five things for kids to do while you enjoy what local merchants have to offer:

  • The action starts early with the annual Kids Bike Parade at 8:30 a.m. Participants will start by decorating their bikes for a contest, and with a police escort will ride through the closed downtown streets. The event is sponsored by KLM Bike and Fitness of Birmingham, Adventures in Toys, Batteries Plus, Beyond Juice and Pogo. All participants should wear helmets.
  • A Kids Zone with a craft tent, bounce house, face painting and a 'shootout'  organized by the Birmingham Hockey Association wil be set up on Maple Road east of Old Woodward Avenue from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Other inflatables, including a rock-climbing wall, will be stationed on south Old Woodward, and mini-golf is planned for the newly reconstructed Merrill Street.
  • At 10 a.m., merchants on Hamilton will launch a chalk-drawing contest with prizes awarded at 1 p.m. Skateboarding demonstrations are also scheduled on Hamilton at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Bill the Magician will stroll through downtown featuring his tricks, and then will perform on a stage set up at the Henrietta Street and Maple Road intersection at 8 p.m.
