The Birmingham City Commission decided that existing businesses will also need to obtain the same permit when they want to make major changes.
In July, Birmingham City Manager Bob Bruner said the city was taking the fast track to amending its zoning code as it rushed the take control of its liquor licenses. However on Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission debated those changes for more than an hour as they tried to figure out the best way to assume control of liquor license transfers after a recent rule change by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC). Ultimately, the commission voted 7-0 to amend the city zoning code so that new businesses looking to sell on-premise alcohol would need to obtain a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) from the city. In addition, current liquor licensed establishments will now need to obtain a SLUP when there's a change in ownership, a name…

Businesses with liquor licenses that want to change owners or locations now have to come before the Birmingham City Commission.
Birmingham took the next step toward further regulating its liquor licenses Monday night, voting to amend the city code so that liquor licensed establishments looking to move or change owners have to come before the Birmingham City Commission. The move is just another step toward regaining control of the city's Class C liquor licenses, after new rules from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) removed the need for municipal oversight during liquor license transfers. On a larger scale, however, the vote was one part of the city's attempt to move all liquor licensed establishments under Special Land Use Permits (SLUPs), which require approval by the city commission. According to City Manager Bob Bruner, the new rules from the MLCC …

A tentative plan from City Manager Bob Bruner would require all new businesses with a liquor license to obtain a special permit from the city.
As the city moves forward on plans to change the way Birmingham's liquor licenses are regulated, City Manager Bob Bruner has a message for existing businesses: you have nothing to fear. "I don't think the existing licensees have as much to fear as much as they think they do," said Bruner at the July 25 planning board meeting. During last week's meeting, the planning board held a study session on a tentative plan to amend the city's zoning code so that any business looking to sell on-premise alcohol would only be permitted with a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP). The plan was first introduced at the planning board's July 11 meeting by Bruner, who said new state rules have stripped local municipalities of their power to regulate liquor license…

Three men were arrested following the shooting, during which no one got hurt, City Manager Bob Bruner said. Meanwhile, the city will schedule a public hearing to consider revoking the bar's liquor license.
Birmingham's South Bar — the downtown restaurant and bar at the center of a recent public safety debate — will be closing its doors after a shooting by bar patrons early Monday morning. Birmingham Police say no was injured during the shooting, which began as a fight on Merrill Street soon after South's closing time, and three men from Southfield and Detroit have been arrested in connection with the incident. According to a statement released by the Birmingham Police Department Tuesday, three men — a 32-year-old from Troy, a 29-year-old from Pontiac and a 28-year-old from Auburn Hills — were leaving South Bar around 2 a.m. Monday when they were assaulted on Merrill Street by two men who had also just left South Bar. The clubhouses at the Lincoln Hills and Springdale golf courses recently unveiled their new beer and wine selections, as well an extended menu.
Birmingham's two public golf courses — Lincoln Hills Golf Course and Springdale Golf Course — received the official OK from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to begin serving beer and wine. According to Birmingham's Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood, the two golf courses officially received their Class C liquor licenses last week. The Birmingham City Commission voted to apply for a liquor licenese at its Jan. 23 meeting but laid out the ground rules in late February: there will be only beer and wine, and alcohol is still not permitted anywhere else in city parks. No hard liquor will be available at the golf courses' clubhouses under the new liquor license, and alcohol will only be sold to those golfing or attending …

Alleged liquor law violation reported to state authorities. Birmingham bar accuses city of selective 'targeting.'
Middle-age rockers call their band Free Beer to be amusing, but the Birmingham Police Department didn't smile when that name was displayed outside South Bar. There's no free beer at a licensed business in Michigan and South is accused of breaking a law that prohibits restaurants and bars from giving away alcoholic drinks. "It's actually funny, but just not to us," said South co-owner Steve Puertas, whose plastic folding sign promoted the April 12 entertainment. After touting 29 plasma-screen TVs, the last three lines said: "LIVE MUSIC THURS FREE BEER." It's the latest in a series of public embarrassments for the South Old Woodward bar and nightclub, which is having a rough spring: Police Chief Don Studt called South's attorney before …
