Zuma Coffee House Closing After More Than 3 Years in Birmingham

In a note posted on the coffee house's Facebook page Wednesday, Zuma owners said they'll be closing after more than three years on South Old Woodward.

Zuma Coffee House, the popular 24-hour coffee spot next door to the Birmingham 8, will be closing after more than three years in Birmingham. In a note posted to the group's Facebook page on Wednesday, Zuma owners Richard and Lisa Spicko announced that they've decided to permanently close the coffee house. "Speaking with many loyal customers, we know Zuma will be missed," the note reads. "We will carry with us the many positive experiences we have shared over the last three and a half years." The Spickos also encouraged Zuma's many fans to keep independent businesses alive. "We encourage everyone to keep up the 'independent spirit' and support locally owned businesses," the note reads. Best Thing We Ate This Week: Working Lunch at Zuma

This coffeehouse serves more than just lattes and muffins.

I have a lot of working lunches, whether that means eating leftovers over my computer or meeting with community members at various Birmingham hotspots. But when it's time to work with colleagues, no place combines space, power outlets, caffeine and good food quite like Zuma Coffee House. For Wednesday's working lunch, I went with a quick favorite: a bagel sandwich with a raspberry Italian soda. Since college, bagel sandwiches have been one of my favorite kinds of sandwiches, and Zuma's brought me back to 8 a.m. class and afternoons on the quad: a plain bagel, cream cheese, lettuce, turkey and tomato.
