The sun is shining brightly over Birmingham today, but a wintry mix is predicted starting late Thursday night.
In the battle of spring vs. winter this week in Birmingham, winter is about to take the lead. Forecasters from the National Weather Service are calling for a chance of snow and freezing drizzle overnight. A "Hazardous Weather Statement" issued Thursday calls for a the freezing rain to develop after midnight in areas north of I-94, including Birmingham and all of Oakland County. There is a 90 percent chance of snow and freezing rain on Friday. "A fast-moving storm system will bring accumulating snowfall late Friday afternoon through Friday night," the statement reads. The power went out Tuesday night for hundreds of Birmingham residents after heavy snowfall fell branches and weighed down power lines.
Residents at more than 450 Birmingham homes are waking up Wednesday morning without power, according to the latest reports from DTE. According to the DTE Outage Map, 470 DTE Energy customers are without power early Wednesday morning in Birmingham, most of which live in the city's northwest corner. Though the cause is listed as simply "area outage," the National Weather Service is warning residents that the heavy snow that fell overnight could weigh down power lines and cause widespread power outages. During a snow emergency, it's illegal to park your car on city roads until those roads have been cleared of snow.
Though the snow hasn't yet stopped falling, Birmingham's Department of Public Services issued a snow emergency parking ban around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night. The parking ban is currently for residential areas only, the alert from the Birmingham Police Department says. During the ban, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city roadway until that road has been cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed. The registered owner of an illegally-parked vehicle will also be responsible for the towing cost. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a strengthening low pressure system will move into the southern Great Lakes region on Thursday, bringing plenty of snow and cold weather along with it. In the Birmingham-area — as in all across southeast Michigan — we've experienced snow, sleet, rain, fog and even thunder this week. Expect snow and a mix of freezing rain Sunday night and into Monday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of southeastern Michigan, including Birmingham and Oakland County. The advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday night until 6 a.m. Monday morning. According to the NWS, Michigan can expect to see snow showers changeover to a mix of snow and freezing rain around midnight. Air temperatures are then expected to rise above freezing by 3 a.m., which will then support another changeover to rain. Ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are possible, mainly on elevated surfaces. Snorwfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches will be possible in some areas, including Royal Oak. Part-time drivers and new, three-lane salt-spreaders will help the Road Commission for Oakland County remove the snow in and around Birmingham this year.
After Winter Storm Euclid dumped snow on Birmingham and the surrounding area Tuesday and Wednesday, residents may be wondering: how is this going to impact the way I drive? This winter season, the Road Commission for Oakland County has hired 30 part-time, temporary snowplow/salt-truck drivers as part of some new approaches to winter road maintenance. “For the first time ever, we have hired temporary, part-time employees to augment our full-time drivers,” said RCOC Chairman Eric Wilson in a statement. “Our full-time staff numbers have dropped so much in recent years that we simply didn’t have enough staff to provide the level of service the public deserves.
