Forget the boys of summer; how about these books of summer? Around Town Laura shares her favorite reads of the season.
It's the "It" book of the summer and it has more twists, turns and stomach-wrenching plunges than your favorite ride at Cedar Point. I'm talking about Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Simply said, it's the story of a wife gone missing. Or does she? Amy and Nick Dunne find love and marriage in New York City. Then, unemployment finds them and they are forced to move back to Nick's home state of Missouri. Amy does not want to be there. "I suppose it's not a compromise if only one of you considers it such." In Missouri — a state with the death penalty, as a matter of fact — the couple drifts farther and farther apart until one day the front door is left open and Amy is gone. Fans of young adult literature will want to pay attention: Four Michigan young adult authors will be stopping in Birmingham today. The four writers — all authors of books for teens and young adults — will be at Baldwin Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. All four will read from their latest novels, which will be available for signing and purchasing, courtesy of Oak Park's BookBeat Bookstore. Baldwin Public Library has a variety of summer reading programs lined up for youths, teens and adults, as well as plenty of prizes to give away.
The end of the school year may be here, but Baldwin Public Library is looking to keep kids — and grown-ups — reading long into the summer. Friday, the library will celebrate the kick-off of its summer reading program from 1-5 p.m. Kids will enjoy a fun-filled afternoon at the library with games, crafts, snacks and prizes, all while their parents pick up information about Baldwin's summer programs and events. I have had my laptop stoled at the libary once when I was doing my homework and had gone to the bathroom and when I came back my MacBook Pro was stole. So if you go to see these four at the libary, watch your stuff or else open carry a gun while the law still say you can so no one messes with you.   more ›
