Birmingham-Area Squash Players Finish Strong During Youth Tournament

Several Birmingham- and Bloomfield-area young squash players place at the top of the age brackets during a tournament in St. Louis.

Several Birmingham-area young squash players recently made a statement at a national level, scoring high at a junior squash tournament in St. Louis. More than 160 players from California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania competed in the St. Louis Gold tournament last weekend, a tournament sanctioned by U.S. Squash. Fourteen of those players were from the Birmingham Athletic Club, which recently hosted the Midwest's largest squash tournament, the Motor City Open. During the St. Louis Gold, 10-year-old Bloomfield Village resident Andrew Barr went undefeated, eventually winning the Boys Under 11 division. Midwest's Largest Squash Tournament Returns to Birmingham Athletic Club

The Motor City Open will be held Jan. 24-29 and feature 26 of the world's best squash players.

Some of the world's best squash players will again descend on the Birmingham area this month for the 14th annual Motor City Open, the fourth largest professional squash tournament in the country. The tournament — to be held Jan. 24-29 at the Birmingham Athletic Club (BAC) — will feature 26 of the world's top-ranked players in the sport, including two former players ranked No. 1 in the world. In total, four the world's top 10 professional squash players and 12 of the top 25 players will compete in the five-day tournament, which will award the winner with a $70,000 purse, a Rolex watch from Birmingham's Greenstone and a spot on the Motor City Open trophy.
