Birmingham Issues Snow Emergency

During a snow emergency, it's illegal to park your car on city roads until those roads have been cleared of snow.

Though the snow hasn't yet stopped falling, Birmingham's Department of Public Services issued a snow emergency parking ban around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night. The parking ban is currently for residential areas only, the alert from the Birmingham Police Department says. During the ban, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city roadway until that road has been cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed. The registered owner of an illegally-parked vehicle will also be responsible for the towing cost. That groundhog is seeming less and less like a good weatherman by the day. More snow is in the forecast for Birmingham and all of Metro Detroit Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). In fact, a winter storm watch has been issued for the Birmingham area starting Tuesday afternoon. According to the NWS, a low pressure system will bring a "plume of deep moisture" across southern Michigan on Tuesday. The cold air means this area of moisture should be able to sustain a band of heavy, wet snow — up to six inches of snow, in fact. Birmingham and Beverly Hills residents: watch where you park your cars today. The city of Birmingham and the Village of Beverly Hills have issued a snow emergency parking ban Friday morning. During the ban in both Birmingham and Beverly Hills, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city or village roadway until that road has been cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed. The registered owner of an illegally-parked vehicle will also be responsible for the towing cost. In fact, Birmingham prohibits parking on any street whenever snow accumulation exceeds four inches, though there are some exceptions for residents who don't have a driveway. Those who qualify for …

During the ban in Birmingham, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city roadway until that road has been cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed, the Birmingham Department of Public Services says. The registered owner of an illegally-parked vehicle will also be responsible for the towing cost. According to Beverly Hills Village Clerk Ellen Marshall, the same rules for those parking on village streets in Beverly Hills.

UPDATE: Winter Storm Warning Remains Until Friday Evening

Lesser amounts of snow are expected in our area, as a storm system that was expected to drop six inches of snow on Birmingham overnight has shifted north.

Friday, 7:30 a.m.: A winter storm warning remains in effect for southeastern Michigan until 7 p.m., though predicted storm snowfall totals south of M-59 are just 2-5 inches now, according to the National Weather Service in Pontiac. Snow will continue to fall in the area off and on through morning before it picks up again by late morning, according to the weather service. Heavier amounts of snow are expected north of M-59, where some areas could still see up to 8 inches of snow. Wind gusts of up to 35 m.p.h. are expected starting this afternoon, causing blowing and drifting snow, which poses a hazard to motorists. In addition, untreated roads may become hazardous today, and travel conditions this morning will be slow in many areas. …
