The sun is shining brightly over Birmingham today, but a wintry mix is predicted starting late Thursday night.
In the battle of spring vs. winter this week in Birmingham, winter is about to take the lead. Forecasters from the National Weather Service are calling for a chance of snow and freezing drizzle overnight. A "Hazardous Weather Statement" issued Thursday calls for a the freezing rain to develop after midnight in areas north of I-94, including Birmingham and all of Oakland County. There is a 90 percent chance of snow and freezing rain on Friday. "A fast-moving storm system will bring accumulating snowfall late Friday afternoon through Friday night," the statement reads. The power went out Tuesday night for hundreds of Birmingham residents after heavy snowfall fell branches and weighed down power lines.
Residents at more than 450 Birmingham homes are waking up Wednesday morning without power, according to the latest reports from DTE. According to the DTE Outage Map, 470 DTE Energy customers are without power early Wednesday morning in Birmingham, most of which live in the city's northwest corner. Though the cause is listed as simply "area outage," the National Weather Service is warning residents that the heavy snow that fell overnight could weigh down power lines and cause widespread power outages. During a snow emergency, it's illegal to park your car on city roads until those roads have been cleared of snow.
Though the snow hasn't yet stopped falling, Birmingham's Department of Public Services issued a snow emergency parking ban around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night. The parking ban is currently for residential areas only, the alert from the Birmingham Police Department says. During the ban, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city roadway until that road has been cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed. The registered owner of an illegally-parked vehicle will also be responsible for the towing cost. Forecasters predict 1 to 3 inches of snow Saturday in southeast Michigan.
Make plans for a wintry Saturday in Birmingham. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Oakland County and all of southeast Michigan for all of Saturday. A cold front pushing through the area will bring scattered snow storms and a total accumulation of 1 to 3 inches, according to the special weather statement. Today's high is expected to be 27 degrees; a low of 11 degrees Saturday night is expected, with a wind chill as low as minus-2 in the forecast. On Sunday, sunny skies are predicted, though the cold temperatures will remain. On Monday: rain is in the forecast.

During the ban in both Birmingham and Beverly Hills, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle, or allow it to remain parked, on any city or village roadway until that road has been cleared of snow.
