'Dark Knight' Shooting Could Not Have Been Prevented, Local Theater CEO Says

"No practical security measures are sufficient to preclude a madman intent on committing mass murder," Paul Glantz said Friday after the tragedy in Aurora, Colo.

Emagine Entertainment CEO Paul Glantz said in a statement today that "no reasonable level of security would have effectively addressed the tragedy that unfolded in Aurora, Colorado" early Friday morning, when a 24-year-old gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theater, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more at the midnight premiere of the new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. Emagine operates theaters in Royal Oak, Novi, Rochester Hills, Canton and Woodhaven. After expressing his sympathy for the victims, Glantz stated that security of its guests is Emagines' foremost responsibility and urges movie-goers to "view such events in the context of a historical perspective." "Just as no realistic building code provision could save a …

South Bar to Close Following Monday Morning Shooting in Birmingham

Three men were arrested following the shooting, during which no one got hurt, City Manager Bob Bruner said. Meanwhile, the city will schedule a public hearing to consider revoking the bar's liquor license.

Birmingham's South Bar — the downtown restaurant and bar at the center of a recent public safety debate — will be closing its doors after a shooting by bar patrons early Monday morning. Birmingham Police say no was injured during the shooting, which began as a fight on Merrill Street soon after South's closing time, and three men from Southfield and Detroit have been arrested in connection with the incident. According to a statement released by the Birmingham Police Department Tuesday, three men — a 32-year-old from Troy, a 29-year-old from Pontiac and a 28-year-old from Auburn Hills — were leaving South Bar around 2 a.m. Monday when they were assaulted on Merrill Street by two men who had also just left South Bar. A very long list of posts. Let me recap if I may, and add my own two cents: +Douchebags come in all colors and flavors. +Some businesses (aka douchebag magnets) wanted to cash in on how badly douchebags like to look important by spending money. +Douchebags will be douchebags. +Not too many night spots open on Sunday late nights ---> cash in. However those patrons are not your regular 9 to 5-ers …   more ›

Redford Woman Pleads Not Guilty to Firearm Charges After Shooting

Crystal Ann White, 28, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm Tuesday during her arraignment at 48th District Court. White allegedly fired a handgun on South Old Woodward in early April.

The Redford woman who allegedly fired a handgun on South Old Woodward last month has pleaded not guilty to one charge of reckless discharge of a firearm. Crystal Ann White, 28, was arraigned Tuesday in 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills. White's bond was set at $10,000 with a 10 percent cash surety, which she paid, and she was released Tuesday. A new court date had not yet been set, according to Birmingham Police Cmdr. Terry Kiernan. White's charge stems from a fight between her and another woman spilled out of South Bar around 2:30 a.m. April 2 and resulted in two shots fired into the air. No one was hurt during the incident. According to police reports, White and a 21-year-old woman from Southfield were arguing outside the downtown …

Birmingham to Investigate South's Liquor License

In addition, City Manager Bob Bruner said the city plans to re-evaluate how Class C "quota" liquor licenses are approved.

After a shooting outside South Bar prompted anger and anxiety among residents, City Manager Bob Bruner has launched an official investigation of the bar's liquor license. Bruner said he's directed the City Attorney's Office and the Birmingham Police Department to investigate the number of incidents at South, as well as other restaraunts and bars around the city. City officials will also address the number of times police have made contact with either the restaurant or its patrons. "(This will) determine whether or not a pattern of patron conduct exists that would warrant a public hearing," Bruner said. Should a public hearing be needed, the city may request that the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) revoke South Bar's liquor …

Victor - Are you really Ted Fuller or David H from downtown publications? Why so angry? Do you have personal financial gain from South closing? I hear you talk about bad crowds at South and you fear for your life? Gimme a break. A 19 yr old carrying a rifle in the middle of Birmingham is where you should focus your energy and anger. Birmingham has many issues, but South isn't one of them. If you …   more ›

After Shooting, South Owners Ask to be 'Part of the Solution'

During a late-night public comment session at the Birmingham City Commission meeting, owners of the downtown hot spot defend the bar/restaurant, even as the city kicks off an investigation of its liquor license.

While the petition to challenge the liquor license at South Bar gathers signatures after gunshots were fired outside the restaurant last week, the bar's owners are making a request: Let us be a part of the solution. “As business owners and longtime residents of Birmingham, we are dedicated to being a major part of the solution,” Bethany Spadafore, wife of South co-owner Joseph Spadafore, said in a recent statement. “So instead of blaming other businesses for an issue that is not just isolated to one business or one location in the city, we are working towards a solution.” The statement was released in response to an April 2 incident outside South, during which a 29-year-old Redford woman shot a handgun into the air in the midst of a fight …

The woman who allegedly fired two gunshots into the air early Monday morning outside South Bar has turned herself over the Birmingham Police, officers said Wednesday.

After a photo of the woman was released to the press Wednesday morning, Birmingham Police Cmdr. Terry Kiernan said the woman in question contacted police and came in for an interview. According to Kiernan, the original incident grew out of a fight between two women, and there were no serious injuries. According to police, a 21-year-old woman from Southfield and another woman were arguing outside South Bar around 2:30 a.m. Monday. The second woman punched the first in the face several times, police reports state. When the first woman punched her back, police say the second woman then went across the …
