Bloomfield Hills high school consolidation claims first coaching casualty as DeWald replaces Seaholm's interim head coach Jim Pobursky.
It was an offer Jim DeWald just couldn’t refuse. The Andover varsity football coach accepted the same position with Seaholm High School on Monday afternoon. “It’s been a whirlwind of a day,” DeWald said in a phone interview Monday night. The Bloomfield Hills Board of Education voted in June to merge both Andover and Lahser high schools into a new Bloomfield Hills High School for the fall of 2013. District officials are currently planning for the consolidation of students, administrators and staff, including coaches. Facing uncertainty after next season, DeWald applied for the Maples vacancy around Christmas time and interviewed in January. “I talked to my principal, my family and I just think it was the right time and the right decision,” …

Austin Hunter and Aaron Burbridge led the way for the Hawks, as Birmingham team fights to the end of a memorable season.
The score: Birmingham Seaholm 0, Farmington Hills Harrison 35 The star: Harrison's Aaron Burbridge, Jake Vento, and Lorenzo Collins will lead the highlight reels with their big plays, but senior tailback Austin Hunter truly led the way by moving the chains en route to 115 yards on 15 attempts and one rushing touchdown. The turning point: On the first play of the game, the senior quarterback Vento took the handoff from his own 31-yard-line, scrambled left, and heaved a bomb to senior wide receiver Aaron Burbridge. It wasn't the greatest-thrown pass, but Burbridge adjusted his route and caught the ball in Seaholm territory before turning on the jets and running for a touchdown. The quote: "I prepared them for that to know that (Harrison) is …

Falcons clinch playoff spot, share of the OAA Blue Division title on road Friday night.
The Groves High School varsity football team saved its best regular season game for last. Down 3-0 at the start of the second half, the Falcons scored 21 unanswered points on Friday night to win 21-3 in its crosstown rivalry game at Seaholm High School, clinching a playoff spot. The victory didn’t just give Groves (6-3; 6-2 Oakland Activities Association Blue Division) bragging rights. It earned a share of the OAA Blue Division title for the first time since 2003 and the school’s first automatic playoff bid since 2004. “That was about as good as it gets,” running back Keon Collier said. “I can’t even describe the feelings right now. This was by far the best thing I could ask for my senior season.” Collier rushed the ball 27 times in the …

Seaholm showed their true colors Friday night with a 'red out' at the Seaholm vs. Groves varsity football game.
Red colored Friday night's varsity football game at Maple Field between Seaholm High School and Groves High School. In honor of Coach Nick Deane, head football coach for Seaholm who died last spring of a heart attack, both student bodies worked together to sell T-shirts for a "red out." T-shirts were on sale at the game, with the phrase 'saving a life is a real sport' on a front and team names on the back. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales before and during the game went toward the American Heart Association. "The support for raising awareness from this community has been phenomenal," said Cindie DeWolf, youth marketing director for the American Heart Association. "This is truly a wonderful tribute to the coach." Seaholm junior Erin Brown …

Marian has strong showing at the Oakland County Girls Swimming and Diving Championships while Seaholm does well in the second OAA Red Cross Country Jamboree.
Marian, Seaholm, Groves The top swimmers in the area all competed at Lake Orion on Friday and Saturday in the 2011 Oakland County Girls Swimming and Diving Championships. Farmington Hills Mercy finished in first place in the team standings by a wide margin with over 350 points. Marian finished in second place while Seaholm (fifth) and Groves (eighth) both finished in the top 10. To automatically qualify for the meet, students had to swim better than cut-off times set for each individual event by Sept. 25. There was also a consideration cut-off time for all events. If a race had less than 40 swimmers reach the automatic qualifying time, then the event was filled out by girls that reached the consideration cut-off time. The Mustangs won two …

Runners from both schools did well against 30 teams at Old Skool Classic on Saturday.
Seaholm, Roeper Cross country coaches at Seaholm and Roeper both had things to be happy about with after the 2011 Old Skool Classic at Wolcott Farm on Saturday. The tournament featured more than 30 schools from around the state and hundreds of runners. During the race, runners ran against students in their own grade, making the meet unique from other cross country meets. Seaholm had more than 60 runners at the race and scored eight top ten finishes. Tess Wilberding was the top finisher for the Maples. The junior won her year’s group with a 5,000 meter time of 20:08. Junior teammates Mallory Wilberding (21:05; fifth place), her sister, and Selena Wallace (21:36; eighth place) also finished in the top ten. The Seaholm girls team also had a …

The Maples fourth quarter comeback attempt falls short on the road Friday night in 29-26 loss.
AUBURN HILLS – The Seaholm High School varsity football team needed one more big play on Friday night. It fell just short at Avondale 29-26 in a key Oakland Activities Association Blue division game. The Yellow Jackets defense slammed the door on a Maples comeback attempt in the fourth quarter with a couple of tremendous plays. “It really hurts to loss when we you are right there,” Seaholm coach Jim Pobursky said. The Maples needed to make a play to get into field goal on their final possession, but struggled against Avondale’s pass rush in the final minutes. “I can’t say enough about our defense,” Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Deutsch said. “We stopped the run all night. We gave up a couple of big pass plays, but other than that they …

The Maples play Avondale in the game of the week while the Falcons will go for a fourth-straight win against Andover.
Are you ready for some football? Groves and Seaholm are looking to pick up some big wins on the gridiron this week, while tennis and cross country also have big matches in the lineup. Here's a look at the big games ahead: Groves The Groves High School varsity football team will head to Andover this week for a game at 7 p.m. Friday. The Falcons will try to keep the longest winning streak the school has had in seven years going against a Barons team still searching for their first win. Groves running back Keon Collier has scored four touchdowns in each of the past two games — can he make it three in a row? Andover’s defense has struggled at times, especially with its depth, so it's definitely possible. Groves' offense has helped the team …
