Birmingham residents are invited to learn about and discuss the ongoing Woodward Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis Study during an open house on Thursday.
Birmingham residents who want to help shape the future of public transit along the Woodward Avenue corridor are invited to participate in an open house Thursday at Baldwin Public Library. Representatives from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and participating communities will explain the ongoing $2 million Woodward Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis Study during the event from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6. The study seeks to develop a transportation plan along 27 miles of Woodward Avenue from Detroit to Pontiac. The 11 communities involved are Detroit, Highland Park, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills and Pontiac. According to a report from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, East Maple Road at Coolidge was the most dangerous intersection in Birmingham between 2007-11.
Driving can be dangerous, including in Birmingham. According to recently-released date from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), the number of accidents has increased slightly in Birmingham since 2007 and the majority of them occur at 10 high-accidents intersections around town. Analyzing data from 2007-11, SEMCOG statistics show there were 766 total crashes within Birmingham city limits in 2011, up from 700 in 2010 and 652 in 2009. The good news? The majority of those crashes — 83.8 percent between 2007-11 —involved only property damage. Only 0.1 percent were fatal and 0.8 percent involved an incapacitating injury. Ozone warnings in May? You'll have to feel the heat to believe it.
It's going to be a hot one Thursday. So warm, in fact, Thursday will be the first official Ozone Action day of the year, according to SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments that created the voluntary program designed to keep the air clean. This is the first time since 1999 that an Ozone Action day has been called in May, according to the agency. According to the National Weather Service a combination of sunshine, high pressure and a southerly wind flow will allow ozone levels to increase. Highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-60s are predicted. Woodward is crowded as it is with just cars. Trying to add more buses and a light rail would just make everything worse for the people who rely on Woodward to get around daily. more ›
