The USA Swimming Foundation provided grants to just 41 programs around the country.
The Roeper School is among a short list of institutions across the country that received grants from USA Swimming to continue swimming and water-safety lessons for underprivileged children. The school's Make-A-Splash program initiatives in 19 states to receive a portion of a $250,000 grant from the USA Swimming Foundation, according to a news release issued this week. More than 130 programs across the country applied for the grant. Created in 2007, the Make a Splash program is a national child-focused water safety initiative of that caters specifically to low-income families and minorities. The Roeper School has a new director for its middle school. Colleen Potocki, currently an English teacher at the Birmingham campus, will take over effective July 1, according to a news release issued Wednesday afternoon. “I am looking forward to the adventure of the middle school director position and remain challenged by and dedicated to the Roeper philosophy and community,” said Potocki, who has more than two decades of experience in the classroom. She succeeds Carolyn Borman, who served as middle school director on an interim basis since 2009. Ernie Righetti, the man "who never quits," has bee the Roeper School's athletic director for 31 years.
Roeper Athletic Director Ernie Righetti is enjoying some well-deserved time in the spotlight after he was named the MIAAA Regional Athletic Director of the Year earlier this month. The Roeper School, specifically the Birmingham-based Roeper Upper School, competes in the MIAAA, or the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administration, which is made up of more than 500 schools across the state. Righetti, a Beverly Hills resident who has served as Roeper's athletic director for 31 years, received the award at the MIAAA's annual mid-winter conference in Traverse City on March 18. February was a good month for the young chess players at the Birmingham- and Bloomfield-based Roeper School. On Feb. 2, the Roeper chess team won multiple awards at the Michigan Scholastic Team Championship, most notably the K-3 team, which took home first place and was named state champions. In addition, the K-5 team finished second in the state while the K-5 reserve teams received trophies for finishing in fifth and seventh place. The Roeper chess team is made up of 26 players from the Roeper Lower School, located on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills, and is coached by Diallo Smith. Roeper second and third grade students opened a gift store featuring recycled and reused items to raise money for the Michigan Humane Society.
Second- and third-graders from the Roeper Lower School continued their tradition of turning what many consider trash into treasure by opening a recycling and reusing gift store. The store was only open for four days, but the students raised $2,435.23 for the Michigan Humane Society. The students presented a check the Michigan Humane Society's Event Coordinator Sarah Nagel on Jan. 9. "It costs an average of $156 to transform the life of one animal, so this donation will make a big difference," she said. The Roeper gift shop was developed and run by Roeper stage III (second and third grade) students. Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, The Community House will host its 21st annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, a breakfast sponsored by Birmingham's Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. Themed "Lest We Forget," this year's event will feature a speech from Dr. Silas Norman, Jr. assistant professor of internal medicine and the associate dean for Admissions, Diversity and Inclusion at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
