State map shows dates and locations of major MDOT road and bridge projects.
Planning your summer roadtrips, or just want to know when you should take a different route to work? A state highway construction map for 2013 is now available from the Michigan Department of Transportation that shows drivers where and when road and bridge projects are occurring across the state. The free annual map - called "Paving the Way" - is available at all MDOT Transportation Service Centers, regional offices, Welcome Centers and most state rest areas. "MDOT publishes this map to prepare Michigan motorists for the construction season ahead," State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said in a press release. "It's a good time to also remind everyone to slow down and pay attention when driving through work zones on major state …

The project, which includes tearing up water mains and replacing sidewalks along Pierce and Merrill in downtown Birmingham, is expected to wrap up in June.
There's still snow on the ground but construction season has already begun in downtown Birmingham. Construction along Pierce and Merrill streets in downtown Birmingham kicked off earlier this week, creating an obstacle for pedestrians and a challenge for local businesses. Approved in late 2012, the project stretches from the intersection of Pierce and Maple, all the way to Pierce and Merrill, by Birmingham City Hall and the Pierce Street Parking Garage. Construction then extends down Merrill until it intersects with South Old Woodward, by the Birmingham 8. Already tired of the construction? Here's what will be done this spring and summer: According to City Engineer Paul O'Meara, the two blocks of Pierce was first paved in 1915 while …

Construction will take place along southbound Southfield Road between Hanna and Lincoln beginning Monday for the next two weeks.
Heads up drivers, particularly if you drive on Southfield Road. There will be periodic lane closures on southbound Southfield Road between Hanna and Lincoln, beginning Monday, while workers replace gas mains. The project is expected to last two weeks, the Birmingham Engineering Department says, with the work happening between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. In addition, at some point during the project, engineers expect there will be one day when the southbound lane may need to be closed entirely to connect the new gas main. A detour route will be posted at that time. Until then, drivers can always bypass that stretch of Southfield by using Cranbrook Road to the west, or cutting down Pierce Street to the east. Anyone with questions is asked to contact the …

MDOT will spend $4.8 million resurfacing more than five miles of Woodward just south of Birmingham.
The Michigan Dept. of Transportation's $187 million construction program for 2013 includes a stretch of Woodward just south of Birmingham's borders — meaning there could be problems with some residents' commutes. According to a press release posted by the State of Michigan, the state will spend $4.8 million to resurface more than five miles of Woodward Avenue, between 14 Mile and Oakridge Boulevard in Ferndale. In total, MDOT plans to "improve 80 miles of pavement and repair 15 bridges in the MDOT Metro Region." "Our 2013 program focuses on stretching our dwindling funds to best preserve our vital roads and bridges," said Metro Region Engineer Tony Kratofil. Will your street or neighborhood be next? We take a look at the road construction projects lined up for this year, 2014 and beyond.
Is your street next on the list for Birmingham's road construction calendar? Saturday, City Engineer Paul O'Meara presented the Birmingham City Commisison with a list of proposed road construction projects for the next five years. Big projects in 2013 include ripping up Pierce and Merrill downtown while also replacing part of Derby Road in front of Derby Middle School. The presentation was part of the city's annual long-range planning session, during which comimssioners take an early look at upcoming projects and the state of the city's finances. Determining which streets need fixing first is a complicated process, O'Meara said, based on an algorithm that looks at both the length of a project and how many additional years of "surface life…

The Oakland County Federal Aid Committee will meet Monday in Beverly Hills to discuss several potential road projects.
Members of the Oakland County Federal Aid Committee will discuss how to allocate nearly $2.4 million in federal road funds headed to the county in 2013 during a special meeting at 9 a.m. Monday in Beverly Hills. The meeting is open to the public and will take place at the Road Commission for Oakland County’s administrative offices at 31001 Lahser Road. RCOC spokesman Craig Bryson said the additional funds became available when Congress passed the new federal transportation bill last year. It was the first new transportation bill in about seven years. The money must be spent during the calendar year, and can only apply to projects on 'principal arterial' roads, which Bryson described as main roads. Potential projects could include Avon Road…

Preliminary designs for a reconstructed South Old Woodward were approved by the Birmingham City Commission Monday night as the city looks to apply for federal funding for the project.
Birmingham is looking to tear up and redesign the south end of Old Woodward in the next few years, and according to preliminary plans, it won't look anything like North Old Woodward. The plans, presented to the Birmingham City Commission at their Monday night meeting, instead featured left turn lanes at all intersections and no center medians. Commissioners approved the conceptual design of the redesigned road, which stretches from Willits all the way south to Brown Street. The plans will then be used to apply for federal funding from the Oakland County Federal Aid Committee. In total, City Engineer Paul O'Meara said the total project should cost around $1.8 million, not counting engineering costs. O'Meara said depending on the level of …

A public hearing of confirmation for the project is scheduled for Aug. 27 in front of the Birmingham City Commission.
Birmingham is looking to reconstruct a large swath of downtown's sidewalks, and residents have one more chance either voice approval or protest. At its July 23 meeting, the Birmingham City Commission declared that a proposed project to replace the sidewalks along a stretch Pierce and Merrill was a necessity, scheduling a public hearing of confirmation for Aug. 27. Still, some downtown business owners aren't happy with the project and have asked city engineers to reconsider the timing — spring and early summer 2013 — a period that is oftentimes the busiest of the year for many restaurant and shop owners. "We all rely on the summer," Thomas Bloom, the owner of Toast Birmingham, said during the July 23 meeting. "Summer erally pushes us …

Detour routes will be posted and a portion of the road will be left open to westbound motorists. The city has not stated when eastbound lanes will reopen.
East Maple Road will be closed to eastbound traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. According to email blast sent to Birmingham residents Thursday afternoon, the route will be closed to eastbound traffic between Adams and South Eton as part of a summer-long construction project there. Friday marks the first day of paving. There is no indication, however, of when the road will re-open. That stretch of road has been under construction since late spring, when the city began replacing aging water mains and sewer lines. A portion of the road will be open to westbound traffic, and a detour route will be posted for drivers heading east out of Birmingham and into neighboring Troy. Drivers are encouraged to take an alternate route. According to …
