Does Birmingham Need More Family Restaurants?

Residents argue over whether Birmingham needs — and can sustain — more family-friendly restaurants in light of several high-profile restaurants closures, including Barrio.

The year is only two months old and it's already been an up-and-down 2013 for high profile Birmingham restaurants, leaving many residents wondering: when are we going to get a family restaurant? Earlier this week, Barrio Tacos & Tequila, the upscale Mexican eatery owned by the same company in charge of the Hamilton Room and Chen Chow Brasserie, announced it had closed its doors for good. "We made the decision to close because, with the high overhead and the changing dining landscape in Birmingham, we just felt it was something we had do," Tracy Wilson, general manager of the Dali Restaurant Group, told Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield. Hyde Park, Rugby Grille Will Expand Birmingham's Open-Air Dining Choices

Steakhouse patio café to feature sofas; Hotel adds sidewalk deck on Townsend.

Call it South Beach meets South Old Woodward. Red-cushioned sofas, wicker chairs and cocktail tables will add a resort-like aura to downtown Birmingham's main avenue when Hyde Park Steakhouse opens. The Ohio-based restaurant group won city approval this month for an enlarged patio at its high-visibility site two doors north of the Birmingham 8. At the same Planning Board meeting, the Townsend Hotel got the OK to break through a front wall near the Rugby Grille and add a 56-foot sidewalk deck with a colorful awning over tables. When you want to take the family out to eat in Birmingham, where do you go? Well, according to Birmingham Patch readers, the Greek Islands Coney Restaurant is the best family-friendly restaurant in town. Readers had a list of family-friendly dining spots to choose from in What's the Best Family-Friendly Restaurant in Birmingham?, from the spaghetti and meatballs at Salvatore Scallopini to the ice cream sundae bar at Max & Erma's. At readers' request, we even added the popular breakfast spot Original Pancake House. POLL: What Do You Care About Most When You Eat Out?

A survey of chefs around the country show locally grown ingredients, healthful kids' choices and sustainable fish rank highest among customers.

Restaurants sometimes surprise us with leading-edge cuisine, but owners and chefs know success depends mainly on pleasing the customer. A new national survey of 2012 menu trends gives high rankings to healthful kids’ meals, regional ingredients and fish that isn't endangered. "Locally sourced meats and seafood" and "locally grown produce" are the top two menu trend choices of nearly 1,800 chefs surveyed by the National Restaurant Association. Nutritious children's meals featuring whole grains, vegetables and fruit also will be on more menus, according to the online survey of American Culinary Federation members last fall. Gluten-free selections and more choices for guests with food allergies also ranks prominently among restaurant trends, …
